A short trip to Helsinki, Finland

Last winter I wanted to visit lots and lots of snowy places! Despite going to Norway and Sweden, I ended up finding my winter wonderland in Helsinki. Helsinki is a perfect destination for a snowy city break as it has to offer a combination of nature, history and art in a metropolitan city. Because it is such a small city you can definitely see it within 24-48 hours (I’m going to admit I spent a lot of time in Cafés drinking hot chocolate and Finnish Coffee). Here’s a list of some of the places we visited:

– Helsinki Cathedral
– Uspenski Cathedral
– Old Market Hall
– National Museum
– Parliament House
– Walk around the waterfront (you’ll get some pretty views of the Ferris Wheel!)
– Take a vintage tram ride
– Go to Café Regatta

Suomenlinna sea fortress

Ok so this place was special.

Suomenlinna Sea Fortress is an UNESCO world heritage site, a giant maritime fortress spread across seven islands. and a very popular place to visit in Helsinki. Board the ferry from Kauppatori – the journey is only 15 mins (3 euros per person) but you get some excellent views during the ride. Check out the videos, I actually felt like I was flying over ice.
Helsinki is surrounded by beautiful little islands that you can reach by ferry (you can get there with a regular Helsinki travel card). It’s so easy to get to the islands, making a fun little escape from the city.

Finland is a country I definitely plan to visit again possibly to see the Northern Lights from Lapland (though my dream is to see the Northern Lights from Iceland!). Helsinki is a beautiful city with very friendly people.

As always, please look after the environment while travelling. Happy travels!
